Safiya Martinez Connell is a performer, writer and educator. She is an alumni of the New York Teaching Fellows program and has served communities in New York City and San Francisco. Safiya holds an M.S. in Urban Education from Mercy College, and an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Her solo show based on her experience as a first-year teacher So You Can Hear Me was received with critical and audience acclaim on both coasts. Look out for her debut as a filmmaker, a short film titled You Are Here, which tells the story of a young artist on the rise– prominently featuring Urban Word NYC alumni alongside New York creatives.
