Louis DeVaughn Nelson (DeVo)

Louis DeVaughn Nelson (aka DeVo) is a multidisciplinary artist and founder of Hokum Arts. He studied Education and Playwriting/Screenwriting at DeSales University, Drexel University and The New School and has trained at The Koresh School of Dance in Modern Jazz. Nelson has worked for twenty years as a performer, choreographer, producer and director for film, theater, dance, and more. His work has been shown in USA, Europe, Australia, and South Korea. Nelson was named Best New Choreographer by Philadelphia City Paper, and has been recognized internationally for his video work that delves into cultural and movement research. He is a proud member of The Dramatists Guild of America. He currently resides in Queens, New York and has 13 presentations of his plays at festivals or staged reading series since he arrived in 2015. For years he served as the Director of the award-winning neo-burlesque troupe, The Peek-a-Boo Revue, where he used his talent as a writer and producer to disseminate satire to broad audiences not regularly exposed to mainstream theater. Several performances served as fundraising programs for social action organizations including The ACLU and The William Way Gay Community Center which serves Philadelphia’s LGBT community. Last season he directed Night of Broken Glass for Village Playwrights’ Riot & Revolution at The LGBT Center and Dear Ms. Kitt for The Broadway Bound Theater Festival.
